The Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) is maximizing sugar cane planting on land that is not yet optimally utilized, as an effort to achieve national sugar self-sufficiency.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture (Wamentan) Harvick Hasnul Qolbi said that the government continues to encourage increased sugar production through extensification, increasing the area of sugar cane plantations in a number of locations, and intensification through dismantling ratoons and maintaining ratoons in 2024-2028 covering an area of 1.34 million hectares with a target of increasing production by 3.4 million tons.

PTPN Group contributed 50 percent to the increase in national sugar production in 2024 compared to 2023. This positive achievement was concluded based on the results of the 2024 final milling assessment meeting attended by the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture, National Food Agency (BAPANAS), and other sugar industry business players in Yogyakarta, Saturday (09/11/2024).

National sugar production until the end of sugar cane milling in 2024 reached 2.46 million tons. This figure has increased by 190 thousand tons, or around 10 percent compared to 2023 which was recorded at 2.27 million tons. PTPN Group managed to increase sugar production by 13 percent, namely from 752 thousand tons in 2023 to 851 thousand tons this year; the increase of 100 thousand tons contributed significantly to the achievement of the increase in national sugar.
