In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic that is still engulfing the world, Indonesian seaweed exports began to record positive performance cumulatively during the January-October 2021 period. This increase occurred due to increased demand from Indonesia's main trading partner, namely China. This increase is expected to continue to strengthen along with increasing public awareness of a healthy lifestyle. Seaweed as one of the raw materials for processed foods and pharmaceuticals is predicted to still have high demand.
A study by the Indonesia Eximbank Institute or IEB Institute noted that the export value of seaweed during the January-October 2021 period recorded an increase of 20.42% year on year (yoy) reaching US$ 177.99 million. The cumulative export value growth was also followed by growth in export volume by 11.68% year-on-year (yoy) to 159.59 thousand tons compared to the same period in 2020 of 142.90 thousand tons.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) reported the achievement of aquaculture performance in 2024. It was recorded that the total production of fish and seaweed cultivation in 2024 reached 16 million tons. This data was conveyed by the Director General of Aquaculture TB Haeru Rahayu. TB said that fish cultivation production itself in 2024 reached 6.37 million tons, an increase of 13.64% from the previous year.
