Production of glue for Plywood Industry Stagnant

PT Duta Pertiwi Nusantara, a producer of glue for plywood, has the tendency to become stagnant. Their main products include UF Glue, PF Glue, UMF Glue, PB Glue, and the half made products include formalin. Their side products include hardeners and additives. Their future prospect does not seem very good. This can be seen from the number of employees in the factory from 2000 to 2004. The number of employees went down by 156 people in the year 2000, 149 people in the years 2001 and 2002, 145 people in the year 2003, and 124 people in the year 2004. The capacity to produce formalin has also gone down throughout the years 2000 to 2004 even though the set capacity was 50,000 tons. In 2001, they produced 20,983 tons. It slightly rose in 2003 to 21,331 tons, then slumped back down to 19,691 tons in 2003. In 2003 if went down to 19,477 tons and it added up to only 16,356 tons in 2004. The capacity to produce the main products also went down from the set capacity of 75,000 tons. In 2000, the production capacity was 31,854 tons, in 2001 it was 32,759 tons, in 2002 it was 28,279 tons, in 2003 it was 28,446 tons, and 26,671 tons in 2004. Sales also experienced a downfall from 32,743 tons in 2000 and 32,946 tons in 2001, to 29,045 tons in 2002 and finally 26,367 in 2004. The lowest cost of shares in 2004 was Rp.190 per share in the second trimester, and the highest price reached Rp.1,050 per note in the last quarter of last year. At the present, PT Dutapermana Makmur ownes 46.67 per cent of the shares, the public owns 42.43 per cent, and the rest is owned by some other individuals. The DPN factory is currently located in Pontianak and only two out of four remain. Their market in Borneo reaches 70 per cent.

Developments in the Coal Business

As the global price of oil continues to rise, the development of coal becomes a feasible energy source option. PT Duta Pertiwi Nusantara (DPN) Tbk, formerly a chemical manufacturing company specializing in plywood manufacturing, shifted its business to coal mining. DPN has planned to enter the coal mining business since 1996. In the early 1997, it obtained a government contract and started holding loaction surveys which was halted due to limited funding. In 1998, the company held another survey in Kalimantan and Sumatra. DPN acquired its first concession in Jambi. It was an 106,000 hectare concession area, but areas that held no potential were returned. DPN was then left with a 76,000 hectare area. Coal in Jambi contains lower calories if compared to coals in Kalimantan. The company feels that coal is a significant commodity since sooner or later the government will implement an energy diversification policy. Currently, the company has just completed constructing infrastructures such as stockpiles and harbours. It is estimated that the initial production capacity will reach approximately 500,000 to 750,000 per year. Furthermotr, DPN and Arpeni Pratama Ocean Line (APOL) formed a joint venture, PT Intitirta Primasakti. Intitirta will start its production by the end of 2006.
