This class consists of units mainly engaged in providing nursing or convalescent home facilities (including the provision of nursing or medical care as a basic part of the service). Nursing homes, or high level care nursing facilities, provide 24 hour nursing care for residents and are staffed by registered and enrolled nurses, nursing assistant or personal care assistants. Generally, these facilities are most suitable for a person in the later stages of dementia, or for those with dementia who also have other medical conditions. Low level care facilities, commonly called "hostels", are suitable for mobile people who may require assistance with personal hygiene, dressing, laundry, cooking, shopping or the supervision of medication. Specific dementia units are small units designed specifically for people with dementia and can be classified as either high or low level care, depending on the degree of care provided. Not all people with dementia require a specific dementia unit. People with special care needs, such as those who may not be safely accommodated in general residential facilities, are best suited to these units. The Aged Care Assessment Team will determine the level, and type, of care needed by a person.
