The dry season that happened last year caused losses to farmers in South Minahasa regency. Many trees die due to drought and clove plantations on fire.

To help the farmers, South Minahasa District Government through Department of Plantations plans to distribute seeds. Head of Department of Plantation, Immanuel Tapang said, the plan as much as 34 thousand seedlings provided clove by the Department of Plantations and already laid out in Budget 2016 with a budget value of Rp.449 million. Currently temporary through an auction process through the Procurement Unit.

After the rice self-sufficiency program, onion and corn, the Ministry of Agriculture will begin to develop the export of other commodities, namely spices. Minister of Agriculture Amran Sulaiman said it has seen the potential of spice development as a strategic commodity for exports that will begin to improve next year, such as pepper, nutmeg, cloves and cocoa.

Amran also said that it would require at least Rp 2 trillion to procure free spice seeds. Therefore, it is expected that additional budget will be given to the Ministry of Agriculture both in APBN-P 2017 and APBN 2018.
